Who We Are

The San Miguel Conservation Foundation is a local land trust based in Telluride, Colorado. Created in 1993 to help protect the special natural and land-based resources in the Telluride Region and San Miguel County, SMCF has partnered with landowners and other public and private organizations in the preservation of over 8,000 acres of open land in the County.

SMCF is a 501c3 non-profit, public purpose, conservation organization.  Funding for our operations is provided through contributions, donations from charitable foundations and from endowments from conservation projects.  As an independent, non-governmental organization, we are able to work quickly, flexibly and confidentially with area landowners.  SMCF has, at times, worked in partnership with other conservation organizations to effect land preservation that is in the public interest.

What We Do

We protect land by accepting donated conservation easements and, under special circumstances, outright acquisition of land parcels.  We participate in public education programs in order to increase public awareness in both the necessity and methodology of land preservation. Our services include referral to attorneys, appraisers, tax accountants and estate planners familiar with conservation strategies.
